Winter Wonderland Adventure in Queenstown, NZ

With Emily Scarlett, Boronia Travel Centre

If you’ve ever wanted to know where you can enjoy the best powder at the most affordable price, then you can’t go past Queenstown, New Zealand.

Not only is it the party and adventure activity central, the added bonus is that Queenstown skiing and snowboarding is also fantastic! Located within a spectacular lakeside and alpine setting, the views are second to none, and you will never tire of looking at The Remarkables soaring above Lake Wakatipu. Photography buffs will have a field-day in Queenstown!

As our in-house self-professed snow bunny explains, “Queenstown is a great base & cheaper option than doing it in Australia with much more variety of Mountains”.

The highlights of Emily’s holiday included Cardrona and the variety of adventure activities on offer. You’ll be overwhelmed by the choice of off-slope Queenstown activities, and if the Queenstown snow conditions are not great at the ski resorts you will never ever be bored. So when she wasn’t tearing it up on the slopes, Emily was sky diving 15,000 feet over the snow-capped mountains (highest legal height - needed oxygen!), then went jet boating, did luge rides, gondola & pub crawls. Other sightseeing options include Milford sound day trips, bungee jumping, white-water rafting, and paragliding.

The best foodie experience was found at none other than Fergburger - known to be one of the best burgers in the world (and perhaps the biggest too). But if you’re not one for queues, then the 40 minute line up may be slightly off-putting. But this once-in-a-lifetime burger bonanza experience and is something you definitely won’t regret. Open 7 days a week until 5am!

Après ski drinks turn into a very vibrant nightlife that continues on well into the evening. But before you retire to bed, the best money can’t buy experience would have to be the amazing views of lights, lakes & snow capped mountains at night.

How to Get to Queenstown

Getting to Queenstown is relatively easy as it has its own international airport located only 10 minutes from the town centre. Direct flights with Virgin Australia/Air New Zealand from Melbourne to Queenstown accommodation, lift tickets & mountain transfers can all be packaged together. Current earlybird NZ Ski deals are out for accommodation with most hotels offering a stay 5 pay 4 deal.
